Before the weather gets unbearably hot (as we know it will in the TX summer) get outside with your toddler or preschooler and go on a fun family picnic! While the idea of having small children in wide open spaces may sound too exhausting, you can eliminate some of the stress with good planning. Anytime you leave the house with your kiddos, a great rule of thumb is to keep the outing as simple as possible. Cramming too many activities into one afternoon can lead to grumpy children and an exhausted mom.

    1. Location, Location, Location – When deciding where to picnic start by doing it at a familiar place. You could even start in your own backyard or at a friend’s house. Being familiar with your surroundings will give you peace of mind to be able to enjoy yourself. Once your kids are older or whenever you are more comfortable, venture out to a local park or zoo for your picnic festivities.

    2. Bring a Friend – Children almost always do better when they have friends to play with. Even introverted children appreciate the company of another child to play with outside. Being outside is the perfect place to spark imagination so having a friend explore with your child makes it even more fun! Plus, having another adult to watch the kiddos means you will have a chance to talk to a grown-up and have another set of eyes looking out for your child as you look after theirs.

An Easter Egg Hunt can be a fun event for the whole family, but did you know it can also be an educational opportunity for your child? Here are six creative ways your child can learn through an egg hunt:

    1.Toddlers Can Learn Colors

Before letting your toddler loose to find as many plastic eggs as possible, tell your toddler only to collect a specific color or colors of eggs. This will help your toddler distinguish between different colors and make the game more challenging!

    2.Toddlers Can Learn Shapes

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, fill plastic eggs with different shaped objects. After the eggs are all found, reward your child for naming each of the shapes found in his or her eggs.

    3.Preschoolers Can Learn Numbers

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, use a permanent marker to number the plastic eggs before hiding them. Challenge your children to find the eggs in order from 1 to 20, or 1 to 100 if you’re that ambitious!

For the rest of the ways your child can learn through an egg hunt, read the full article here: What Your Child Can Learn From An Easter Egg Hunt

Is your child’s back talking becoming a problem? Are you tired of hearing “No! You do it!” from your toddler or preschooler? There may be something you can do to help curb those annoying, whiny, temper tantrums.

Instead of responding by saying “You’ll do it because I said so” or “Don’t ever talk to me like that!” there are other ways to help your child learn to disagree with you respectfully. The best way to stop back talk is to provide your child with some independence – but within your own limits. Kids of all ages need a sense of personal power to make their own choices and express their differences in opinions with parents. When parents make all the decisions for them, children naturally want to lash out, and so they do — with words and sometimes, physical aggression.

So how can parents teach their children to disagree respectfully? Read the full article here: How to Stop Back Talking Without "Because I Said So"

Your child’s brain development happens primarily in the first five years of life. There are several milestones a child will experience that parents should be aware of however, realize that these are just guidelines as each child develops at an individual pace. This blog will look at a few of the milestones in your child's brain development during the first twelve months.

    Months one – three

The brain development milestones during this stage may seem small and insignificant, but these are as much a part of your child’s growth as any other. During this stage, sensory aspects are developing. Your infant should begin to recognize familiar voices and smells. A baby at this age should also begin to look at nearby objects and faces that are within view. These milestones can be enhanced by our expert infant care staff.

    Months four – seven

By this stage, your infant will be able to utilize both hands to grasp objects and will be able to respond to certain words. Your child will also be able to sit without support. This is one of the major milestones as it means that your child’s physical and mental growth is moving along well. Again, keep in mind that each child will develop uniquely.

    Months eight – twelve

During this period, your child will learn to crawl, which sets the foundation for being able to walk. Generally, around the twelve month mark, your child will be able to walk with a little support from surrounding objects or perhaps even without this support. Other aspects of this period include babbling, which leads to speech.

Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Houston / Katy understands your child’s brain development requirements. Contact us today to find out more about your child’s growth and development when you enroll him or her in one of our accredited programs.

Parents are finding out about the benefits of breast milk for optimum infant care. There are many benefits of breastfeeding your child. Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Houston, Texas has put together a list of some of the facts about breast milk and how it can assist your child’s development. Parents should know that breastmilk is the best food for a child.

    Antibodies

A mother’s breast milk is made for her child’s specific needs. By breastfeeding, your child is getting antibodies which can help him or her to fight off infections and sickness. These antibodies cannot be obtained from feeding formula. Ideally, a child will receive breast milk for the first six months of life which coats, protects, and allows the child’s systems to develop. However, if a mother is unable to breastfeed, infant feeding formulas have been fine tuned over the years to provide adequate nutrition for a child as well.

    Nutrients

Breast milk gives your child the specific nutrients and vitamins which he or she needs. This means that breastmilk is specific to your child’s needs. Your breast milk gives the child a rich and completely nutritious meal every time he or she feeds.

Great for your baby and you

Breast milk is not only great for your child’s development but breastfeeding is also great for you as a parent. After pregnancy it does take a little while for your body to ‘repair’ itself, and breastfeeding actually helps this process. Another benefit of breast milk is that it has a calming toxin that affects both you and your child.

There are benefits to breastfeeding and Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Houston / Katy, Texas has experts who understand this and other child care variables. Contact us now to find out more useful child care information or to enroll your child in our AdvancED™ accredited program which will lead him or her to the top.

    Theories on Brain Development

The brain constantly rewires itself, and this is what researchers call brain elasticity. Studies show that the brain changes physiologically and psychologically from early childhood to late adulthood. This is related to a child’s environment, and associated with the interactions your child will experience.

The IQ is not fixed at birth. Studies show that no two human brains are alike, and each child is different from birth. Education, stimulation and environment play a major role in brain development.

Studies also reveal that there are sensitive periods in brain development, also known as windows of opportunity. These refer to nurture and nature in brain development. Sensitive periods are shorter for skills learned through the natural environment (sight/vision), than skills learned through cultural interactions (language).

Three facts to know about the brain:

    1. At birth the brain will have 100 billion neurons, only 17% are activated.
    2. The brain produces 800 neurological connections for every second it is properly stimulated.
    3. The brain activates from the bottom to the top and from the back to the front.

Knowing more than one language is almost essential in today’s world, but often people struggle to learn a new language as an adult. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Houston/Katy, we know that preschool is the best time to learn not only our native language, but also another language. Learning a second language builds stronger neural connections for your child’s brain development.

Language acquisition at an early age

Your child’s first language is learned at home with the family, and he or she will absorb everything spoken around him or her. Your child can learn to understand new words in two different languages easily. Formal language classes are not necessary. You can teach your child a few words at at time, put on television or radio in another language, or get some age appropriate bilingual books, toys, or CDs. You can also use music to help your child learn.

    How you can start

Start early: You can start teaching your child as early as age two or three, though he or she must have some basic vocabulary in his or her native language in order to begin learning another language.

Make it easy: Teach your child a language that he or she can hear in the neighborhood or at school.

Make it fun: Use music and games to help your child engage in the learning process.

Go slow: Teach him or her a few words at a time. Do not overwhelm your child. For a toddler, use a time guideline of about 20 minutes, or 30 minutes for a preschooler.

Manage expectations: Each child learns at their own pace, so be patient.

As your infant grows, she needs the right sensory stimulation, which plays a big part in brain development. Sensory stimulation is one of the best ways an infant learns and adapts to every day life. At Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Houston/Katy, we have been successfully running an infant and child care program for many years, and we understand the importance of sensory stimulation for your infant. Below we have listed some useful information about the importance of sensory stimulation.

    Sensory Stimulation

The best way your infant to learn and grow is through sensory stimulation. Infants learn through their environment, their families and through their own physical senses. Sensory stimulation is ultimately about movement and exploring.

Sensory stimulation can be addressed in several ways including:

    • Vestibular: The vestibular system contributes to movement and the sense of balance. Your infant’s vestibular system will immediately respond to rocking or swaying motions. This stimulation should be done slowly and gently.

    • Tactile: This stimulation is one of the most effective and important ways to communicate with your infant. Massaging and playful touching will convey security, tenderness and attention. This type of stimulation is vital for parents in developing a strong bond with their child.

    • Visual: Though infants will look at everything, they are more engaged when looking at faces, therefore regularly engaging your infant with family and friends will help them develop visual skills more quickly. Also, slow moving objects are easier for them to focus on, so, hanging objects are good options. Hang them about twelve inches above your infant’s head or upper half of the face.

Sensory stimulation is important for your infant’s brain development and for physical development so ensure that this is something you do everyday.

preschool_houston_txThe experience of going to their first summer camp in Houston, Texas, can be intimidating for some preschoolers and it is natural that they feel nervous or even experience some separation anxiety. Parents and caregivers can help children make this transition smooth and show them how much fun camp can be.

    • Get excited: Looking forward to camp is an important part of establishing summer camp as a positive, fun experience. Talk about the various activities with your child and try some of them out at home. This will boost their confidence and prepare them for the upcoming experience.

    • Visit the site: A significant amount of stress can be due to fearing the unknown, especially if this is your child's first camp or group environment. Make plans to visit the camp with your child and meet the staff together. If you are unable to visit the site, use online resources. Many camps have websites filled with pictures of everything your child will experience.

    • Get involved: Prepare together for the event. Shop for summer clothing, read about the camp and pack camp necessities such as a change of clothes, sunscreen, and a water bottle together to help your child anticipate the camp experience in a positive, engaging way. Children who are anxious are often helped by this process, which makes them feel more in control.

    • Talk about what to expect: While summer camps are supportive, nurturing environments, they will still be different from home life. Talk with your child about what a typical day at camp will be like, talk about the food and activities and how it will feel to be surrounded by so many new faces. Keep it upbeat, emphasizing what an adventure it will be and your child will be more open to the changes.

    • Some nervousness is normal: Almost all children feel a bit nervous at first. This is a completely natural experience in response to a different environment. If you are worried that your child is not enjoying camp, speak to the camp director or on-site owner. The director can give your child more support and help them make the adjustment successfully.

When you enroll your child in the summer program at Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Houston/Katy in Houston, Texas, you are bringing them into an environment where everyone is family and your child is our priority. Our expertise and emphasis on individual attention ensures that every child is fully supported, both emotionally and developmentally, to thrive in the exciting adventures of summer camp.

This year our theme is "Camp Nature Kids" and has plenty of outdoor group activities for children ages three to twelve years. These include indoor dramatic play "nights out under the stars", nature walks, learning about wildlife and being physically active.
